How we work together
Evidence-based approaches tailored to your unique experience
Everyone comes to counselling with their own experiences, strengths and challenges. That’s why I don’t believe in using the same approach for every person or every couple.
At The Connection Room, I take a person-centred approach, tailoring each session to your unique needs. Together, we’ll explore what’s happening, make sense of your experiences, and use evidence-based approaches that best support your goals.
The approaches below provide the foundation of my work and may be used individually or combined, depending on what best supports your needs.
Person-Centred Approach
A person-centred approach places you at the heart of the counselling process. It recognises that you are the expert in your own life and that meaningful, lasting change happens when you feel emotionally safe, heard, accepted and understood.
My role isn’t to tell you what to do or judge your experiences. Instead, I work alongside you with empathy, curiosity and respect, creating a supportive space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions and challenges at your own pace.
When we understand ourselves better, we become more confident in who we are. And when we’re more confident, we’re often better able to make choices that align with our values, establish healthier boundaries and create the kinds of relationships we want in our lives.
My hope is that you leave counselling with more than insight. I want you to leave with a greater understanding of yourself, increased confidence in your ability to navigate life’s challenges, and practical tools that support you long after our sessions have ended.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a practical, evidence-based approach that helps you understand how your thoughts, emotions and behaviours are connected.
Sometimes we develop unhelpful thinking patterns that can leave us feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck or lacking confidence. CBT helps you recognise these patterns, gently challenge the ones that aren’t serving you, and replace them with healthier, more balanced way of thinking.
Together, we’ll explore practical strategies you can use in everyday life to better manage challenges, improve emotional wellbeing, and create lasting, positive change.
Gottman Method
I have completed Gottman Method Couples Therapy Levels 1 and 2 and use these evidence-informed principles to support couples in building stronger, healthier relationships.
The Gottman Method is grounded in decades of scientific research and integrates principles from behavioral, cognitive, attachment and emotion-focused therapies. It helps couples understand the patterns shaping their relationship, strengthen their friendship, improve communication, navigate conflict with greater respect, rebuild trust and create the emotional safety needed for lasting connection.
Every relationship is unique, so I tailor therapy to the needs of each couple by integrating other evidence-based approaches where appropriate. Together, we’ll identify the patterns that may be be keeping your relationship stuck, build on your strengths, and develop practical strategies that support meaningful, lasting change.
Mindfulness Based Approaches
Mindfulness helps you slow down, become more aware of your thoughts and emotions, and respond to life’s challenges with greater calm and clarity rather than reacting automatically.
When appropriate, I incorporate mindfulness -based approaches into individual and couples counselling to support emotional wellbeing, reduce stress, strengthen relationships, and help you feel more present and connected.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps you develop a healthier relationship with difficult thoughts and emotions, rather than trying to avoid or fight them.
Instead of getting stuck in what you can’t control, ACT helps you focus on what truly matters to you and take small, meaningful steps towards the life you want to live. It can be helpful for anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem, grief, and navigating life’s challenges with greater flexibility and resilience.
Together, we’ll develop practical skills to help you move forward with confidence, even when life feels difficult.
