Do I Have to Bring My Partner to Relationship Counselling?

individual having relationship cunselling

Perhaps you’ve been thinking about counselling, but your partner isn’t ready. Maybe you’d like to talk things through privately first. Or you’re single and wondering why the same relationship patterns keep showing up.

You’re welcome to come on your own.

At The Connection Room, you can book individual counselling to explore relationship concerns without your partner attending.

A space to understand what you need

You might know something doesn’t feel right, but struggle to explain it. Perhaps you feel unheard, find it difficult to set boundaries, or spend so much time considering someone else’s feelings that you’ve lost touch with your own.

In our sessions, there is space to pause and explore:

  • What you’re feeling and what matters to you.

  • Patterns you notice in your relationships.

  • How you communicate your needs and respond to conflict.

  • Boundaries you want to understand or strengthen.

  • What you want from a relationship—and what you’re no longer comfortable with.

You don’t need to arrive with clear answers. We can begin with whatever feels important to you.

What if my partner doesn’t want counselling?

You can seek support for yourself even if your partner chooses not to attend.

In individual relationship counselling, my focus is on your experiences, wellbeing and choices. We won’t be diagnosing your partner or assuming we know their perspective.

We can explore how you want to respond to difficulties, what is within your control and what support you need.

Coming on your own does not mean taking responsibility for fixing the relationship by yourself. Your partner remains responsible for their behaviour and choices. Individual counselling cannot guarantee that they—or the relationship—will change.

What if I’m single?

You don’t have to be in a relationship to explore how you connect with others.

You may be processing a breakup, navigating dating, rebuilding confidence or wanting to understand patterns before entering another relationship. These are all things you’re welcome to bring to our sessions.

Is this the same as couples counselling?

No. Individual counselling focuses on you. Couples counselling involves both partners and focuses on the relationship together.

If you later want to explore couples counselling, we can discuss suitable options and how to keep the arrangements clear and fair.

If there is fear, intimidation, control or abuse, please raise this with me when it is safe to do so. Our priority will be your safety and appropriate support—not asking you to communicate better to prevent someone else’s harmful behaviour.
