Separated, But Still Finding Your Feet?
Maybe the separation happened last week. Maybe it happened years ago, and you’re frustrated that it still affects you.
You might miss your partner. You might miss the home you shared, the plans you made, or simply having someone beside you at the end of the day. You might feel relieved and heartbroken in the same afternoon.
Even if you were the one who chose to leave.
People can be quick to ask, “Are you moving on?” It’s a difficult question when you’re still trying to understand what happened and what you want now.
When it’s new and raw
In the beginning, getting through an ordinary day can take a lot of energy. There may be conversations about children, money or living arrangements while you’re barely sleeping and your emotions are all over the place.
You don’t need to have your future worked out right now. Start with what needs your attention today. Who can you talk to honestly? What support would make this week a little more manageable? What decision can wait until you’ve had some breathing room?
When it’s been a while
Time passing doesn’t answer every question. You can have a full life and still feel caught by a memory, an anniversary, or the future you once pictured.
If you feel stuck, try asking yourself what stuck means for you. Are you waiting for an explanation? Still blaming yourself? Afraid to trust someone again? Unsure who you are outside that relationship?
There’s no shame in needing help with a question you’ve carried for a long time.
Moving forward can start small
Moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting your partner, dating again, or pretending you’re fine. It might mean learning to trust your judgement. Saying no without explaining yourself for hours. Making a plan that belongs to you. Finding parts of yourself that had little room in the relationship.
Ask yourself: “What do I want more of in my life now?” You don’t need a perfect answer. It’s a place to begin.
Separation can leave you feeling as though so much has been decided for you. Your next steps deserve to be shaped by your needs, values and hopes.
